Non-fiction writing on the topics and issues that I care about

Documentary, parenting and belonging
My research examined the representation of care for children (parenting) in ABC documentary productions Jihad Sheilas, NTER. The research focus on Muslim and Aboriginal parents in Australia highlighted in these documentaries aimed to examine how depictions of the parent’s care for the child intersects with notions of national belonging. Based on these examples, my research found that the genre of documentary films can both be complicit with racist and objectifying practices, but also important in rebutting and challenging these. One Perfect Day Melbourne launch: Readings, 2013
One Perfect Day is the story of my very dear friend, Veronika Csosz, and her experience as a young woman growing up in post-World War II Hungary. Veronika fled as a refugee after the 1956 Hungarian Uprising was crushed by Soviet forces. She was one of 200,000 people who fled and found new homes around the globe - thanks to neighbouring countries which opened their arms in welcome and the proactive efforts of the international community to help people re-settle. Veronika and husband Pal settled in Melbourne where they lived their lives happily, bringing up twin daughters Ronnie and Terrie (pictured here at the Readings launch). Veronika and I spent two years working together in interviews and drafting. She passed away in 2011, happy that her memoir was complete and soon to be published.
